MONTHLY BREAKFAST AND BUSINESS MEETING

13 October 2007

 

1.     The October meeting was called to order at 8:25 a.m.  President Jeff Standring presided.  Twelve members attended.  Breakfast was provided by Jeff Standring and Dwight Cooper with the assistance of other members.  Opening prayer was conducted by Jeff Standring.

2.     The cooks were thanked for their excellent meal.

3.     The minutes from the September meeting  were approved as submitted.

4.     The treasurer’s report showed a balance of $1,577.06.  The report was approved.

5.     Old Business:

a.   The suggestion to host a car wash at the $5 Car Wash was discussed. In view of the severe drought, it was determined that a car wash would only be done if the water from the commercial establishment was recycled.  Rob Roberson will check to see if they recycle. 

b.   The Fredericksburg United Methodist Church golf tournament at Lee’s Hill in September 21st was a success The Peace team scored one or two under par.  The winning team scored 19 or 20 under.  The proceeds went to Heart Havens.

c.   Discussion about providing people to serve at the VCU Segal Center will be differed until November.  Jeff Standring will contact Bob Tate to see how many people would be needed from Peace to staff the concession.

d.   The Peace Seniors Group will have a speaker from the Quantico Chaplain’s office in November.  The speaker will talk about the role of chaplains in Iraq and Afghanistan. 

e.   No report was provided about the status of the bus.  The bus needs the steering repaired, the gas gage fixed and some repairs/or coverings for the seats.  The scouts are assisting in getting the repairs done.  Jeff Standring will contact Andy Lepp for status on these repairs. 

f.    Bill Forester was welcomed back after his illness.  Chuck Smith has undergone treatment for his illness.  The treatments are difficult but Chuck is doing well.  The Shorters are doing well in their new living space at Wilburn Gardens.

g.   Several members will be attending the UMM retreat at Blackstone in early November.  They will depart from the church on November 2nd at 8:00 a.m.

6.  New Business

a.   Fruit will be offered for sale several times starting in November.  Jim Scott has graciously volunteered to head the effort.  Prices were established as follows:  Oranges -- Full Box $26; Half Box $14  Grapefruit -- Full Box $28; Half Box $15.  After some discussion, it was thought practical to make pricing consistent for both oranges and grapefruit as follows:  Box $28; Half Box $15.  An order form will be available at the church soon.

b.   Sales of White House ornaments has been slow.  Only six have been ordered thus far.  Orders will be taken through October.  See Rob Roberson for details.

c.    The UMM has been asked to support the upcoming 25th Anniversary of Peace Church by providing a cake or cakes for the event.  It is anticipated that 150 people will attend the luncheon on October 28th.  It was suggested that we contact Tina Robison to see if she would be interested in making a cake or cakes.  Jeff Standring will contact her and will seek her advice on a design or lettering to go on the cake.

d.   A discussion of having a special offering for a Peace family was discussed.  It was suggested that the special offering be done around Thanksgiving. Information about the offering will be placed in the next newsletter and in the bulletins.  The UMM discussed and passed a motion to provide $500 for the donation.

e.   Children’s church has a need to acquire a curriculum to better match the church lectionary themes.  Cathy Groel has asked that UMM assist this effort by providing them with $200 toward the purchase of the curriculum.  UMM approved a motion to provide that amount.

f.   The possibility of installing a steeple on the church was discussed.  Preliminary estimates of the cost for a steeple are in the $10,000+ price range.  Due to current fiscal concerns, the issue will be tabled for consideration in the future.

g.   Habitat For Humanity will provide Peace with a recycling bin for aluminum cans. Habitat has an agreement with Alcoa and they will be paid for cans collected.

h.   The contemporary Coffee House service will be held Saturday, October 20th at 6:30 p.m.

i.    The slate of UMM officers for next year will remain the same.

j.    A card will be sent to Bea Wells on the loss of her son.

k.   Tickets will be available soon for the December 8th Revels in Washington.  See Pastor David for details.

l.    Our revelry program will be conducted on December 16th.  Music and other presentations are needed.

7.   The next meeting will be November 11th.   Cooks will be Bob Brooks and Michael Steele.

8.   Pastor David gave the closing prayer.  Our meeting was adjourned at 9:34 a.m.
